First Trick or Treat

Published by under Holiday Magic,Photos,The Boy,The Man

It rained all the ding-dong day on Halloween this year. Fortunately, The Man’s place of employment (which is where I used to work) does indoor trick-or-treat. If an employee wants to participate, he or she puts a balloon on their cubicle or office, and the kids can go trick or treating. It’s nice. So, we took The Boy there.

He dressed up as Obi-Wan Kenobi. I got his costume off Amazon and it was a nice, lightweight job that he wore over a set of pajamas. I tried to keep him dressed lightly, but his face was still rosy red by the time he was done. That might be because he went full blast from the time we started until we finished. He didn’t care about the candy, he was just glad there were so many people he could talk to and a nice big place to run around in.

When people tried to give him candy, he would often take a piece out of his bucket to give back to them. I guess he thought he was working on the barter system. He wanted to carry around a box of Nerds the whole time. And he didn’t say “Trick or Treat”, possibly because I had never taught him to say “Trick or Treat”. Instead, he ran up to everyone and greeted them with a very enthusiastic “Hey, man!” This was a big hit, as you can imagine.

We got a lot of compliments on his cuteness. He IS pretty cute, if I do say so myself.

Memorial Weekend

Let’s see, what’s new?  Oh, I know!  I may or may not have broken a bone in my finger.  Last week, The Man and I were working on getting a gate installed, so that eventually I can just open a gate and walk into my berry patch instead of disconnecting a section of fence and crawling under the netting.  So, I’m holding a post, and he’s got the fence-post rammer in ramming position.  And then he brought the rammer down, the post slipped into an old hole that we weren’t planning on using, and my finger got squished between the gate and the post, or the gate and the rammer, or the gate and God’s Angry Hand Of Vengeance.  Whatever happened, the outcome was not good for my finger, which would no longer bend and the second knuckle and was swelling alarmingly.  I went to the doctor the next day (because this happened at around 6 PM) and got some X-rays done, and was told by the X-ray dude that it might take 2-3 days for the films to be processed and for anyone to get back to me.  So, I waited two days, and on Friday, after hearing nothing, I called my doctor only to find that his whole office had shut down for the holiday weekend.  I guess I’ll call them tomorrow.  This must be that outstanding American health care system that everyone is so adamant that we never change.

So, this weekend we ran around a lot.  The Man went to a minor-league baseball game on Friday night, and I did not.  On Saturday, we went to a birthday party for D– and C–’s daughter, who is now 16 years old.  On Sunday, we went to church, then Grandma’s, and then to The Man’s dad’s house.  And today, we worked and worked, mostly at getting the pool up and some water in it.  Filling the pool is a 3 – 4 day process, because instead of paying someone to bring us a whole lot of water, like sane people, we use a hose.  The Man also mulched around the dwarf cherry bushes, and I mostly stood around and stared, because having a gimpy finger makes it hard to pull weeds and stuff.  Setting up the pool was a real blast, too.

The other thing I accomplished this last week was getting a web site up for my “business”.  If you are interested in seeing what I’m up to in that line, check out aftertwelveonline.com.

Annnd…the kitchen ceiling just started to leak.  Joy.  Must go.  Must get a bucket.

O Christmas Tree

Published by under Holiday Magic,Photos,The Man

Behold, Christmas Tree 2008.

I was also going to include the picture that we took for our Christmas cards, but since we haven’t sent them out yet, I thought I’d hold off.  I think the people who receive the cards deserve the first viewing of The Man’s “Just take the damn picture, already” smile, and my “I’m kneeling very uncomfortably” grimace of holiday cheer.

Home stretch

Published by under Holiday Magic

My Christmas gifts are 75% bought, although some of them are in that eerie state known as “shipped, but not yet arrived”, or even worse “not yet shipped”.  I don’t like that.  I had a problem last year with things being late and I don’t want a repeat.

The gifts that have arrived have been wrapped and placed under our tree, except for the ones that are still waiting on additional parts to be complete.  We got Luke’s dad a three-part gift and so far only one part has shown up.  What’s even worse is that I just realized (literally, while I was typing the previous sentence) I haven’t even gotten a confirmation e-mail for his stepmom’s present!  Um, eek?  Guess I better check on that.

My Christmas cards are all addressed, except for one, which is waiting on a name/address confirmation.  I need to get stamps and send them out.  We decided to send picture cards this year, and neither one of us is totally happy with the picture we ended up using, although at least we were both looking at the camera, smiling, and not cross-eyed or in the middle of talking.

This is all to say that I feel kind of on the ball this year, in regards to Christmas, at least.

zomg housework

Published by under Holiday Magic,Work

Well, I got all the reports done for the month of November and sent in my invoice, so now I have a small break in which to get the house ready for Christmas.  Usually, that would consist of getting the tree out and decorating it, but since we’ve moved the computers into the dining room, this year I’ll need to do some extra wrangling.  The corner where the tree usually lives is occupied by The Man’s computer.  So, what I need to do is:

  • Clean out the downstairs closet so there is actually room in there.
  • Get rid of the coat rack in the dining room, which has three holders broken off of it anyway.
  • Move all coats into the closet.
  • Put my computer desk over by the door where the coat rack used to be (I predict a rather chilly month for me)
  • Get the tree out and put it up where my computer used to live.
  • Profit!

Ok, maybe not profit, but at least we’ll have a place for the tree.

Some of this stuff (like cleaning out the closet) is on the agenda for today, but I already put myself behind by sleeping in until the shameful hour of 10 AM, when I had planned on being up by 8:30.  I also need to go to the grocery store today, possibly the worst day in the world to go, because I need to pick up a veggie tray and chips for Thansgiving snacks.

Before I go back to work sometime in December, I need to put up the tree, put up the rest of the Christmas decorations, put up the exterior lights, and start my Christmas shopping.  Did I say I had a break?  That doesn’t sound like a break to me.
