More bees

Published by under Current Events,Outdoors,Snippets

I saw this article today on the BBC. Even more reasons to plant for the bees – bumblebees never hurt nobody. Well, OK, bumblebees probably hurt somebody at some point, but they will mostly leave you alone unless you stomp on their nest or pick them up off their flower. Bumblebees are the furry, dumbass teddy bears of the bee world. Plant some wildflowers for them.

Summer Mayhem

Published by under House Renovs,Outdoors,The Fam

It seems like we’ve been busy, busy, busy lately, and that’s probably because it’s creeping up on summer, and life gets hectic in summer.  Hey, we only get a few nice months every year.  We have to make the most of them.

It doesn’t help that The Man and I have voluntarily revamped our weekends, or at least revamped our Sundays.  Sunday is now “Go to church then go visit family” day.  We try to get out to Grandma’s and his dad’s at least twice a month.  One Sunday is already taken up with his monthly D&D game, and sometimes the other Sunday gets appropriated too.  But mostly, 3 out of every 4 Sundays we are trekking into the Thumb.  And that’s OK with me.  I prefer to have a day dedicated to family and visiting.

We are also trying to get the septic field tilled and planted with grass.  Well, the tilling and planting is The Man’s part of the job.  I’m responsible for watering.  The mosquitos are so pleased to see me at evening water time!  I have reserved a spot on the field for a little flower garden.  This one will have props!  I’m planning on putting an arbor back there, which will have sweet pea vines climbing it (sweet peas should be in the mail soon).  Also, a small bench.  And the rest will fill in as I see plants that I must have.  I want it to be kind of a wild little patch.

Not much has been going on inside the house.  We are saving up money to do the trim in the dining room, living room, and spare room.  And we’re also eyeing up Retrofoam for the downstairs insulation.  We don’t want to have to tear the walls down if we can help it.  But, that is months or years in the future.

I’ve been getting very antsy to go up north, but since Dr. Mom’s area is still in the heavy part of Tick Season, there is no chance of seeing them before late July or even August.  Stupid ticks.

Dad is up here for a couple of weeks, but he left today to spend the week up north at Grandpa and Grandma’s.  No ticks for him, though…or at least not a big infestation of wood ticks.  I guess they have deer ticks, but not so bad.  Anyway, when he gets back I’m thinking we’ll have to get together with him, J-bird, and her husband for a barbeque or something.  Mmm…barbeque.

The annoyance begins.

Published by under Rants,Snippets,Stupidity

Ever since the first snow fell, my Forecastfox addon has been showing the Severe Weather Alert icon.  Because. . . wait for it. . . IT’S SUPPOSED TO SNOW!!!  AHHH!!!  NOT SNOW!!

It’s winter. . . in Michigan. . . you say it might be snowing later on?  NO!  That can’t be true!  Not the total horror of. . . LIGHT SNOW!*

LIGHT SNOW SHOWERS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP AGAIN THIS AFTERNOON AS
COLDER AIR FILTERS INTO SOUTHEASTERN MICHIGAN. VISIBILITIES MAY
BRIEFLY DROP BELOW 1 MILE IN THE HEAVER SNOW BURSTS. SURFACE
TEMPERATURES THIS AFTERNOON WILL REMAIN AT THE OR ABOVE THE
FREEZING MARK WHICH WILL LIMIT ANY ADDITIONAL ACCUMULATIONS TO ONE
HALF INCH OR LESS THROUGH 500 PM.

UNTREATED ROADS…BRIDGES…AND OVERPASSES IN THE AREA WILL BE
HAZARDOUS. EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION DURING THE EVENING PEAK
DRIVING TIME.

Please also note that they were so kind as to tell me that it might be slippery, if the road I’m on happens to be “untreated”.  Perhaps those of you from out of state are unaware, but Michigan is Kind Of Poor right now.  We don’t treat roads for things like “light snow”.  We barely treat our roads when there are ice storms.  We have to save our salt for things like margaritas to stave off the cold.

And, to tell the truth, I’ve never seen a single Michigan driver exercise anything resembling extreme caution even on dry roads.

At any rate, I’m kind of annoyed with my Severe Weather Alert icon right now.  I would like to once again point out to the fine people at the National Weather Service that the months of November through February are a SEASON, not a severe weather condition.  No need to throw the red exclamation point out there every day.  Save it for something special.

*Too much sarcasm?  I can never be sure.  Better safe than sorry, I always say.

It’s sunny!

Published by under Health,Outdoors

First of all, how come you’re not all buying up my eBay stock? This round is full of books. CHEAP BOOKS, I SAY. Some of them are crazy how-to pagan books from my five year stint as a Wiccan. Yeah, that lasted from age 16-21. Oooh, rebel. Some of them are crazy how-to D&D books from The Man. And some of them are just regular old fiction books. If you are in the market for a cheap book, I am your girl.

Second of all, I got my teeth cleaned today. My dental hygienist is awesome, in that she does not try to talk to me when she has sharp instruments in my mouth. She also praised and praised me for quitting smoking. Then her and the doctor laughed at my tonsils. HA-HA LOOK AT THOSE HUGE TONSILS! But, um, it’s probably good that you still have them because they filter stuff out and they look really healthy. Just. . . big. You know. Big and beautiful! (Yes, they actually said that. My tonsils are gorgeous.)

Third of all, it’s sunny and nice outside. I’m planning on going out and working in the yard a little. I raked up a whole bunch of weeping willow trash a couple of days ago, and now there is a big ball of wicker in my yard. It looks like something you’d see for sale at Pier 1, only x200. I also need to finish painting the back porch since that kind of didn’t get done last year. And I noticed the other day that the windows in Chris’s room need some attention, which means I’ll have to sit on one, paint the other, and then paint the next one from inside. Because if you think I’m standing on top of my bay window to paint, you are smoking the crack.

A big truckload of dirt is getting delivered on Friday, which means I will be building a berm this weekend. And that also means I have to get out to J-bird’s house and pick up the grape hyacinths she so graciously saved for me.
